As always you will find the usal suspects Bavu Blakes and Headkrack holding it down as well. Further more... Hydroponic Sound System is the Dallas-based Hip-Hop collective whose version of dusted, musical hip-hop can best be described as global soul. Combining a myriad of elements into one coherent and deep sound, producers Skinny Fresh and Rube collaborate with multiple MC's and musicians to create music that taps into diverse influences ranging from Kraftwerk to dub to Afro-beat to dancefloor jazz to late 80s NY rap. Hydroponic Sound System released their debut CD “Routine Insanity†in November of 2000 and the underground press took notice as it racked up great reviews in Urb, CMJ, and XLR8R (which compared it to 3 Feet High and Rising and It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back) and made year-end Top 10 lists in the Dallas Morning News and Village Voice (critic Havelock Nelson). They've appeared on numerous Bomb compilations as well as overseas compilations for Stone Groove and Timewarp, and have played with diverse acts ranging from Snoop Dogg to Anti-Pop Consortium. Hydro is also part of the Central Standards collective (which includes Rehash amongst others), which is responsible for the Southern Soul Construction series and A Strange Melodic Shape. They have also released their 2003 sophomore CD grids/loops/intersections on Alterate Take Records. Hydro frequently draws on the vocal skills of Bavu Blakes, whose baritone and fluid delivery complements the diversity of Hydro'' grooves. Blakes, who was dubbed 'one of Texas' brightest new stars' by legendary rapper The D.O.C., has garnered great press in publications ranging from The Source to CMJ to Blaze to Murder Dog. He has also built up a massive reputation and following as an impeccable live performer. Other vocal contributors include Headkrack, who scored a #1 hit on various German hip hop charts with the Landspeed distributed 12' “Clearâ€. He has also appeared on remixes for Tweet's 'Oops' and Lumidee's 'Never Leaveâ€. Hydro also works with with Oakland rapper/poet Azeem, who has traveled the Globe with Spearhead and on the strength of his own solo work has been nominated by the California Music Awards.'
