Swedish producer Opolopo has been immersed in soulful music since early childhood. Having a keyboard playing father with a respectable collection of jazz, soul and fusion records, laid out the obvious musical path. Artists like Herbie Hancock, Jeff Lorber, Earth Wind & Fire, Bob James, George Duke, Quincy Jones, Chaka Khan and Gino Vannelli started him off and are still major influences. After been doing productions and remixes for the majors he's now following his own path, focusing on jazz and soul influenced dance music. His productions and remixes have been supported by, among others, Kyoto Jazz Massive, Daz-I-Kue, Afronaught, Mark de Clive-Lowe, Rainer Trüby, Patric Forge, Solid Steel, Dez Parkes, Jay Scarlett, Marcia Carr, Kristi Lomax and Nik Weston. His latest release is the 12" Life's a Dance on Especial Records, featuring the vocal stylings of Amalia Townsend. First time out on the Swedish Brandy label Opolopo hits us with the Madness EP. This EP gives us a nice blend of various of styles that will fit any club or dancefloor. The title track Madness feat. Nadine Francois could be described as vocal soulful house with loads of energy and interesting instrumentation. We also get the alternative Reach for the Stars mix. This mix is slightly more broken that ends up in a straight 4/4. The flipside starts of with the funk-breakbeat moster Unidentified Funky Object. Crisp, heavy drums and base on this one, with strong influences from the sounds of Herbie Hancock etc. The second track Lorber continues in the same funky spirit but with a slight touch of the underground west London sound.
